Every year during the last weekend of September, there is a huge festival called the Light Move Festival in Łódź, Poland. What is the best way to explain what this festival is? I think the best way is to say imagine you did some illegal mushrooms, that is what the entire city looks like.
The city sets up an entire citywide light art installation from various artists which they project onto the buildings throughout the city. This festival is a combination of both the historical identity of Łódź as well as the alternative artistic identity of Łódź. This is the largest art installation of its kind in Poland and one of the biggest in all of Europe. This display combines the architecture of buildings, light display, kinetic motion, sound, and colour all into our beautiful dynamic display. The festival also aims at pointing out forgotten corners of the cities with art installations being there, creating a truly immersive experience where parks are fully illuminated and sound surrounded.
This festival is truly one of the most beautiful and unique tings I have ever seen in Europe. It definitely puts Łódź on the map as a unique place in Europe and its timing is also great. Since all universities start on October 1st in Poland, this festival comes at the perfect time for students to go out into the city, enjoy the art, get to know the city, and integrate themselves with the large student population of Łódź.
The festival takes on basically all night long but the fully immersive light and sound display stops around 2am. The light will continue on for most of the night but the sound will stop around 2am. This does not mean that the festival is over though, the festival continues and is portrayed through the nightlife of Łódź. All clubs and bars in Łódź embrace this festival and give you a great "after party" experience, with my favourite being Lordi's. Lordi's, also known as the best sound club in all of Łodź, gives you a truly amazing experience after seeing these lights and this club throws the best after party during the light festival. The music played there is house and EDM, so if that is your taste this is the place to be.
